Very
few people predicted this matchup in the Stanley Cup Finals when the playoffs
started back in April. Pittsburgh, Philly, the Canucks and the Rangers were the
contenders then, with Los Angeles and New Jersey longshots at 12/1 and 14/1
respectively.
And even
as they kept on winning, people thought the next round would be the end for
either of them. Sure, the Kings beat the Canucks, but Vancouver was one Sedin
short. St Louis and Hitch will take care of ‘em. And then St Louis got swept
and Chicago and Detroit were both gone and all of sudden the Kings’ crown
turned to burnished gold.
Competition
was tougher in the east, and the Devils’ first round series win over Florida
got lost in the attention paid to the other three series, all of which were of
surpassing excellence. But when New Jersey hammered the Flyers people sat up
and took notice and now, all of a sudden, New Jersey is back in the Stanley Cup
Finals for the first time in nine years and is a good value underdog bet to win
its third Championship.
The
Kings are the favorites to win this year’s Stanley Cup because being on the
road doesn’t bother them in the slightest. They’ve gone for the kill in each of
their playoff series so far, going 3-0 up before mopping up the survivors. They
have the best goalie of the playoffs in Jonathan Quirk, and a free scoring offense
filled with big men who aren’t afraid to put their weight about.
However.
If Los Angeles loses Game 1, then it’s game on. If LA wins Game 1, chances are
they’ll roll on to win the Kings’ first ever Stanley Cup. But momentum is a big
thing in sports, and it can change over sixty minutes if the Devils are able to
front up like the Canucks, Blues or Coyotes couldn’t.
Besides,
it’s not as if this some bad New Jersey team. They measure up pretty well
against the Kings, and it’s only that momentum that’s in the difference. If the
Devils win Game 1, it’s game on in the Stanley Cup Finals.
